Louder Than a Bomb-Tacoma 2017 Schedule

LTAB 8x11-page-001 (1)

We are looking forward to Louder Than a Bomb-Tacoma: The Tacoma Teen Poetry Festival, taking place April 29 at Tacoma Community College (in Building 11). Join us for a day of community building around poetry and spoken word featuring workshops, a lunchtime conversation, and a poetry slam.

Here is a tentative schedule (subject to adjustments):

9:15 am — Doors open

Poets and adult mentors can begin arriving to TCC to get set for the day.

9:45 am — Introduction and ice breaker

A chance to get to know who’s in the room what we’ll be doing for the day.

10:30 am — Workshops*

We are offering a few workshops poets can choose to take. So far, we’ve confirmed:

  • Your Voice, Out Loud: Performance Toolbox for Poets w/ Emilie Rommel Shimkus
  • Elements of Hip Hop/Expression w/ Gloria Muhammed, Miriam McBride, and River Jones
  • It’s Your D*mn Page: Strategies to Claim It w/ Robert Lashley
  • What Genre Is This? An Exploration of Experimental Writing w/ Nicole McCarthy.
  • Smashing Rules, Having Fun w/ Renee Simms

12:00 pm — Lunchtime Conversation: The Poet in the World*

What is the responsibility of the poets and artists to society? What about society’s responsibility to the poets and artists? We invite a handful of local artists (including  Washington State Poet Laureate Tod Marshall) to steer a conversation about social responsibility, resistance, and art making.

2:00 pm — LTAB Poetry Slam

Teen poets from greater Tacoma compete in a friendly poetry slam competition where the points are not the point, the point is the poetry. Teams from Fresh Start/TCC, Gig Harbor, North Thurston, and Baker Middle School will be joined by indy poets from all the county. We will hold some slots for day-of registration, but if you are interested in competing as an indy, let Mike know at michael@write253.com.

We are excited to feature Smokey Wonder as our DJ for the event. If you don’t know Smokey Wonder’s skills, check him out here.

The slam is open to the public and is free and all ages. We encourage everyone to come out and see what the teen poets in the region have to offer!

Bonus!

Hang out after LTAB-Tacoma for the Tacoma Poet Laureate ceremony featuring current Tacoma Poet Laureate Cathy Nguyen, the Intellect Gang, and the 2017-19 Poet Laureate, who will be named that evening! This event will take place in the Auditorium (Building 2).

*A note about workshops and lunchtime: These events are open to teens and their adult mentors (teachers, slam coaches, etc.) If you are a teacher who would like to bring a group, please contact Mike at michael@write253.com for more information. If you are a teen/young adult writer and would like to attend, drop us a line or rock up day of!
